It is our pleasure to provide you with a brief overview of what we consider to be one of the premier sports medicine programs in the country. We offer the excitement of a major university setting with first class facilities, nationally competitive teams, a nationally recognized athletic trainer based health care system for elite university athletes and a model system of multi-specialty care offered in a hospital based, sports medicine center. This subspecialty effort is offered in the setting of the nation’s largest university owned hospital and an orthopedic department that has maintained a national position of prominence since its origin by Arthur Steindler. We are proud of the clinical expertise and academic accomplishments of our faculty, our top ranked educational curriculum, as well as our multifaceted research program ranked second to none in the orthopaedic world.

While our well-established fellowship has enabled many alumni to achieve high profile positions over the past 25 years, we are most proud of the fact that the program has continued to grow and expand. In the last few years alone we have added faculty, expanded educational facilities, added resources to our research team, and brought a variety of health care professionals together into a brand new facility. Our new multi-disciplinary free standing sports medicine center provides Orthopaedic and primary care sports medicine clinics, MRI and Physical Therapy services.

General Fellowship Description

The purpose of the fellowship is to provide a broad based experience in all aspects of Orthopaedic sports medicine. The fellow will receive experience in dealing with operative and non-operative problems of all joints. The fellow will develop clinical excellence in sports medicine by becoming a key component in a sports medicine center that offers athletic training, physical therapy, primary care and orthopaedic sports medicine expertise. Medical coverage is provided for over 700 Division I athletes on 20 teams at the University of Iowa, as well as non-university amateurs and professional athletes. Wide exposure to sports-related injuries to the knee, ankle, shoulder, hip, elbow and spine is provided in clinic and event-coverage settings. The fellowship is directed by Brian R. Wolf, MD, MS. Other faculty instructors for the fellowship include Ned Amendola, MD, John Albright, MD, James Nepola, MD and Matthew Bollier, MD.

The fellow will perform and assist in operative procedures that include the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip and ankle. These include open and arthroscopic knee ligament reconstruction, osteotomies, cartilage resurfacing procedures, meniscal repair and transplantation. In the shoulder the fellow is exposed to arthroscopic and open shoulder labrum repair and stabilization, rotator cuff surgery and shoulder arthroplasty. The fellow also has a great exposure to foot and ankle sports medicine. This includes ankle and subtalar arthroscopy, ankle cartilage restoration, Achilles repair and ligament reconstruction. Elbow arthroscopy and ligament repair / reconstruction is part of the fellowship. Lastly, hip arthroscopy procedures are performed. The fellow is actively involved in teaching of residents in the clinic, operating room and a four-station fully equipped arthroscopy skills laboratory. The fellow is in charge of weekly cadaver lab arthroscopy skills sessions involving the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle. The fellow is expected to prepare grand rounds on a monthly basis and to participate in weekly sports medicine conferences. At least one major publication and/or scientific presentation of a research project is required and facilitated. An optional second year is available for fellows interested in orthopaedic research or an additional advanced degree. The fellow will have dedicated time per week for academic learning, conferences, and teaching, in addition to conducting research project(s).
