John G. Bowman
9th President 1911-1914

Flexner’s recommendation would have been followed if not for the intervention of the 9th President of the University of Iowa, John Bowman. Bowman did not want to see the University of Iowa Medical School closed, but knew that he had to recruit outstanding faculty who could serve as clinicians, teachers, and scientists. On October 6, 1913, he invited Dr. Arthur Steindler to move from the Drake Medical School where Steindler was Professor of Orthopaedics to the University of Iowa. This slide shows the letter from President Bowman to Arthur Steindler.
