Treatment of scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and spinal deformity formed the cornerstone of orthopaedic surgery practice in the early days of the "specialty" of orthopaedics. Today both surgical and non-surgical interventions may play a positive role in the treatment of children and adults with spinal deformity.
